Students With Disabilities

As an art teacher, I had a student with Asperger's syndrome, a form of autism spectrum disorder. This student's disability affected their learning in several ways. They faced challenges with social interaction and emotional regulation, which often led to episodes of frustration and distress during art lessons. To accommodate and modify instruction for this student, I implemented two strategies, such as independent work and technological support. The student worked independently in a quiet environment on a computer. This allowed them to focus on their work without feeling overwhelmed. The student used a variety of programs that allowed them to express their creativity in art. By implementing these accommodations and modifications, I witnessed positive changes in the student's experience. They became more engaged, comfortable, and gradually gained confidence in their artistic abilities. |

• Describe at least one way you have used technology to meet the needs of a student with a disability in your classroom. Be sure to describe the specific technology and how it assisted the student with a disability.
• My students were asked to create poster advertisements to sell the school’s yearbook. Students were given a rubric of what to include in their visuals. Many students created posters using traditional medium, such as markers, crayons, and poster paper. Some of my students chose to create a digital advertisement using Adobe Express, which is found on our school’s learning platform. The use of this technology allowed my students with disabilities to excel in a creative expression of the final product. The technology took away the fear of creating a work of art by hand and allowed the student’s creativity to dictate the success of the project. I found it so successful, that I now incorporate this technology into more of my lesson planning. |

Assessment of Learning

I had a Specific Learning-Disabled student in my class that was in a wheelchair and always had a personal aide with her. She had limited use of her hands but was able to use an iPad or computer in a limited capacity. She loved art, but it was very difficult for her to physically create it. I allowed her to use the digital program Paint to express her creativity and complete her art assignments. I modified her assessments by asking her questions and listening to her verbal responses. This student benefited from these accommodations because she was fully engaged in the learning process and was able to demonstrate her learning. |
