Students with Disabilities

I have a student for the last four years in my band class. He plays euphonium. This student has Tourette's Syndrome. His tick is to make head movements and vocalize loud sounds at the same time. These ticks cause him to not be able to play some classes at all or miss important parts in the music. He also feels embarrassed because it does happen while we play so it becomes part of the sound we are creating. This student has always been a strong advocate for himself and always introduces himself to new people with information on his condition. I have seen this student work hard to still learn and work through this disability and it has been very inspiring to see. |

There is a student with visual impairment. So all off the music we read, will be uploaded to an ipad and then i can increase the size to the point that they can recognize the music notation to play. They also have a device that when tapped with their foot will move the screen to the next section. This allows them to keep up with the music without having to stop playing. It really has changed their life in terms of being able to play with the ensemble. |

I have a current student in my percussion class. He has physical and mental disabilities. Everyone in percussion must pass off major scales and exercises on marimba. For him, he is given multiple chances to test his knowledge, more time to process the question and if he pauses or hesitates during the assessment he is not penalized. These have worked very well for him to be successful in the class. |
