Students With Disabilities

In the past, I had a student who had a medical disability in which she was born without arms. Her level of functioning was amazing. However, for my art class, I made sure she had the devices that she needed to successfully complete the work. We had a small table that she could access with her feet. (She used her feet to draw/write) We used clips or tape to keep the paper from moving. Her work was very good and she enjoyed the opportunities to create artwork. She also had a paraprofessional to accompany her and assist with some needs.

I had a student in my 2D art class who had a health impairment. She was born without arms. She had a para that was with her all day. Her disability was not limiting to her in my class. She was very proficient in using her toes to complete tasks. She had a special desk made for her. She fit in very well with the other students. Her para and I worked together to differentiate her assignments so that she could be successful. One way that we differentiated her assignments was to offer frequent breaks. Some of the tasks that required very fine motor skills, required assistance from the para-professional. Overall she had a successful experience.

2. I use technology in my classroom daily. One way that I have been able to successfully help students of many different abilities is through the use of a digital classroom. At first I used Google Classroom. Then, my district adopted Schoology, so that's what I use now. In the online classroom, I post written directions for each assignment. I also post verbal instructions and demonstration videos of each assignment broken into smaller steps. In addition, I include resources that I find online like youtube videos and magazine articles that might help students with the content. After my initial teaching and demonstration of the lesson, students can go to the online classroom for review or individual instructions. They can also contact me through messages in the app in case they want help without calling attention to themselves. My school gives each student their own computer, so this is always easily accessible to students.

2. Exit cards and student journals are a great way to informally assess student learning. I use the exit card after presenting a new artwork assignment. One prompt I might use is, "Explain a part of the assignment that you want to know more about." Student journals or sketchbooks can show student thoughts and ideas throughout the lesson. It is used to determine student growth and development of skills. I try to use the student journal at least once per week with a teacher directed prompt or drawing assignment. Then I can assess student growth periodically as a summative assessment of skills.
