Students with Disabilities

I currently have a student who has a cognitive disability that greatly affects their ability to communicate verbally. However, this student is able to sing and repeat back phrases and words if I put them to music and sing them while I play my ukulele. She enjoys music and her primary teacher says it is one of the few times in the day that she fully participates in lessons and responds with the whole group. |

A long time ago I downloaded a xylophone app to my iPad that I can lock on certain keys and lock the screen so students can't exit it. So if we are playing or singing instruments and trying to play in C then I might only activate the C and G bars on the xylophone and then they are able to successfully participate because they can keep steady beat and not be distracted by other things on the iPad. |

I teach our ACCESS points class where the students are in a full time self-contained unit due to severe cognitive or comprehensive disabilities. For assessments in their class I have students who are non-verbal use movements, dancing, playing instruments, drawing pictures, or manipulatives to demonstrate understanding of what we are working on whether it is maintaining a steady beat, repeating simple songs, and performing. |
