I had a 5th grade student who was wheelchair bound but was extremely intelligent and wanted to do everything that the other students did in class. We did a lot of hands on projects and centers in class, along with outside activities. The class had to be arranged in a way for him to maneuver his wheelchair around because he did not like being stationary and not being about to move thru the centers or go over to the counter to pick up needed supplies. When we go outside or to lunch, we have 2 "responsible" students who ride the elevator with him and they meet the class downstair. These simple accommodations help him to feel very included and a part of the class. |

Graphic organizers: most of my students benefit from using graphic organizers because it helps them to be able to organize their work better. We do a lot of work around Science concepts and using a graphic organizer helps them to be able to lay out the content and put the information that relates to it in a sequential manner. It also serves as a great visual for representing information.
Centers: I know that students learn best from each other and working in centers checks many boxes. They get to work with each other and learn from each other. They move through different activities with helps to address the various learning styles and lastly, in centers, I can differentiate the activities and tailor them to their ability levels. This does take a bit more work, but it is worth is to see students of all ability and academic levels being successful. |

Assessment of Learning

I have a student who is ADD and has a very hard time staying focused. I have him sitting near the front of the room, near my desk. During assessments, I sit near him and I either tap him when he begins to lose focus or I may just whisper to him to stay on track. He is a good student and if he can "retain" his focus, usually does well in class. Sometimes, I do a verbal assessment with him where I ask him questions while he works and I record his responses. |
