Students With Disabilities

I had a student with a hearing impairment. Being a dance teacher, I am often yelling notes and instructions over loud music (to keep the energy up in class). This student would find this very difficult so I started doing a few different things to make it easier for her. I would try to remember to pause the music before giving notes, I would keep the volume at a reasonable level, and also wear a microphone on some days so this student had a better time hear my instructions. She was wonderful at self-advocacy but I wanted to make it so she didn't have to speak up on her own behalf too often. |

Option 2: I have learned to use technology more than ever before. It has particularly come in handy when breaking instruction into "digestible bites" or "chunks". Using an online classroom platform has made it easier to send reminders and notes to my students with videos and music files to go along side it to make at-home practicing more accessible. Plus, it gives those who need more time a breakdown of each step. I have also been able to link articles, use subtitles in my videos, and also use the "slow-mo" function to aide in my instruction online for my students with disabilities to receive the help they need. |

Assessment Of Learning

Option 1: I had a student with a physical disability who was unable to perform the same way other students could. Therefore, this student was assessed differently. Each performance (for a grade) was filmed. So, this student was also able to be assed by completing a reflection and critique of their own performance after reviewing their video to recognize what he/she did correctly and what could have been improved upon. |
