Students With Disabilities

I have had and do have students with a wide range of disabilities. Many with ADHD &/or emotional/behavioral issues. Many on the Autism Spectrum. Students with Physical disabilities & audio or visual disabilities.
One student whom I have currently is on the autism spectrum. He is high functioning and intelligent, he can be very imaginative but he can also be manipulative and generally tries his best to avoid doing his art assignments and to watch youtube videos on his school laptop. He had a para but they did not get along well and now he is without a para in my class. He will interrupt class discussion loudly sometimes inappropriately and tends to dominate conversations. He is good at arguing/excusing his way out of doing work. At times he needs to get up and pace or stretch and move around in different areas around the room. We have discussed where he go in the room to do this when he feels the need. He is in my 5th period class this year which is only 50 mins and right before lunch everyday. A large part of his concern in the second half of class is making sure that he leaves "on time" 5 mins early for lunch as his accommodations allow.
I have found putting him with some other helpful & encouraging students helps him stay on task. He and they can discuss common interests and I usually use that as a way to engage him in the artmaking process that we are working on. He has a simplistic drawing style but I encourage him engage him in conversation and model steps for him and have him follow along with me so that he gains confidence and ownership of his art-making & creative learning process. I have allowed him to use different mediums or digital mediums to complete assignments effectively.

Assessment of Learning

I have an ASD student this year, who also has focal seizures semi regularly. She will also have occasional screaming fits and punch tables or break items disrupting the class as a whole.
She has benefited from a few different accommodations in my 3D art class. Additional time on assignments, alternative assignments/assessments & preferential seating. I have seated her with a group of students who enjoy making art and have been very helpful, sympathetic and encouraging as friends and peers. I am lucky to have an enclosed patio area adjoining the art classrooms. I have my student and her tablemates sit outside at a picnic table in the covered area. This change in environment is helpful for her temperament and creativity. She interacts better socially outside and with less stimuli from the rest of the class and the help of her friends and I she is able to better complete her art assignments. At times I have adapted the product or the concept of an assignment to fit with her interests and levels of understanding.

Describe at least one way you have used technology to meet the needs of a student with a disability in your art classroom. Be sure to identify or describe the specific technology and the student's disability.

Incorporating technology is imperative to meet the diverse learning needs of all our art students. I have interactive slideshows full of visual aids and examples as well as graphic organizers and built into lessons accessible to all students. We incorporate the smart board and mark over and draw onto images. Many of my students with ASD or ADHD love to use apps such as Procreate and Pixlr to create artwork or drawings digitally. It also helps facilitate their understanding or work with their learning needs as well as incorporating their individual interests. The use of overhead projection when doing demos really helps everyone see, as well as modeling individually as needed. Youtube and other art video resources are great for sharing information and incorporating process and demonstrations quickly and thoroughly.
