Students with Disabilities

I currently teach a student that has cerebral palsy. He uses a walker mostly to get around but will sometimes use his arms to "scoot" himself around the room. I usually have a student that is close to him that will get his materials or instrument. When playing movement games he uses his walker to participate- the other students are wonderful when partnered with him. They will go slower so that he can participate. When we are notating melodies or rhythms he finds it easier to use an ipad than regular manipulatives. |

In my classroom I have two students that are unable to hold a pencil due to their disability. I do a lot of composing in my classroom with paper an pencil and I at first used Peer Partners to work with these students. I really wanted to find something that would make them feel more independent during this assignment and finally did on the website musicplayonlin.com. I now let my students compose using their staff tool, as well as their rhythmic composition tool. This allows students to drag the notes to the places they would like and compose their own melody or rhythmic composition. My students love it and are so proud that they are also able to compose independently. |

Option 1: In my classroom students are required to make a visual representation of a phrase that we are working on ( could be rhythmic or melodic). Most students choose to do this with a white board and a dry erase marker. I have a few students that are unable to hold a marker comfortably, so i also alow students to use manipulatives to show their answer. My students with disabilities (as well as some other students without) use cubes or different cut-out shapes to show the phrase on the floor. They are able to manipulate them to show either the melodic contour or group them to show the rhythmic sounds. They are very confident doing it this way and are almost always successful. |
