My latest story is selecting a student with ASD to participate in our Elementary All-County Music Festival. She required some gentle assistance and modeling, 1-2 breaks during long rehearsals, and a CD of the selections. She has an exceptional tonal memory and singing voice. She enjoyed the performance and did an outstanding job. |

We have students with ASD mainstreamed into most general education classes. We find that using strategies to help our ASD population also benefit our non ESE students. In the music room and in the classroom we implement Kagan strategies often. We are also aware that many students do not come to school with good social skill and these must be taught early and often. We also use many visual clues and mneumonic strategies to assist in comprehension. |

I have a non-verbal student with ASD. He is able to listen and respond to SmartBoard games like Incredibox. I need to assess him on his ability to respond to and perform a steady beat. I have been successful in using movement videos like Go Noodle Kidz Bop where he responds with the group and Orff instruments- individual response with support- playing a simple bordun while the rest of the class sings and keeps a steady beat on their lap. |
