Students With Disabilities

I have had the pleasure to work with many different types of students with disabilities over the years. Currently I have a child with autism that has a hard time staying focused on the work in class. I noticed that he was not getting projects done in class and was constantly being redirected on work. He was always sketching in his notebook. We were working on a stained glass project and I modified the requirements of the design to incorporate what he had been sketching to help him take his drawing to a final project. |

I use peer partners and guided notes in my classroom. I have some students who have autism, and have a harder time staying on task with directions and by pairing them in partners they are able to ask the teacher for help as well as their partner to help guide and keep one another on task. Other students have visual impairments that don't allow for quick note taking. I provide guided notes to have the student follow along with the discussion and helps them to focus more on the content discussed than rushing to write the information down. |

I have had a student who was in a wheelchair and I had to adapt the way we did the project for him. The other members of the class were able to paint their pictures flat on the table, but the way this students wheelchair was designed he was unable to move his arms enough to angle them down towards the table. I built an angled easel for him to paint comfortably and still complete the required painting. I have also had multiple students who have a harder time answering questions due to their speech impairments. Instead of having a verbal response, I have altered their oral presentation to a written answer that allowed them to feel comfortable and still answer the questions. |
