Students with Disabilities

I have a student who has Autism Spectrum Disorder. He does not have the language skills to explain when he does not understand what is expected of him or when he is confused on the directions. He is at a developmental age and gets easily frustrated. I discovered if I sat one on one with him, he could place his hand on my arm when he was feeling overwhelmed. I would then show him step by step what he needed to do. His artwork has progressed successfully since then. Administrator wrote:
Think of a student with a disability you have now, or have had in the past. Identify their disability. Describe the way in which their disability affected their learning. Describe at least one or more ways you successfully accommodated or modified instruction for this student. Share your response in the threaded discussion.

Assessment of Learning

I usually assess class projects based on completion of the elements of art and principles of design. I have a class with a student who has an other health impairment (ADHD). He started the year in groups with everyone else and requested to sit alone to focus more. When assessing their artwork, I found he would forget several of the targeted elements and principles. I found by chaining the directions, he was more able to focus on the task he was working on. I also used more than his completion for assessment. I took into account our conversations and my observations of his effort while we kept pace on the project completion.

In my classroom, I have used technology regularly to help students with ADHD. We use the smartboard to show artwork as it is being created. We also use the smartboard as an overhead to see the completed project. I show short art tutorial videos on artists or artwork that can be created. I use chaining to break down the tasks at hand through slideshows of step by step tasks to complete the assignment. New subject matter can be introduced easily by discussing background knowledge and then presented short biographies on the artist we are studying.
