Students with Disabilities

I had a student for 2 years (4th and 5th) who had Cerebral Palsy among other diagnosis. She was confined to a wheelchair with very poor gross and fine motor skills. She had many accommodations, modifications, and adaptive technology to assist her learning, but she did not have a one-on-one nurse or para. In the art room this meant that she was unable to independently complete many of the grade-level projects. In addition to providing her with different project opportunities I also made available to her many supplies which other students wouldn't typically have access to including adaptive scissors, toddler paintbrushes meant for a fist-grip, play doh and modeling clay to help improve her hand strength, and a i-pad and drawing apps so she could use her fingers to draw rather than a pencil. She always wanted to try whatever we were doing in class, but would become frustrated when it was something she couldn't manage, like sewing. But with help and the right tools she was able to practice the same skills, if not achieve the same results.

2. Describe at least one way you have used technology to meet the needs of a student with a disability in your classroom. Be sure to identify or describe the specific technology and the student's disability. Share your response in the threaded discussion.

I have used technology in the art room with my student who has cerebral palsy and very poor motor skills. She used her ipad in regular classrooms for many things including speech to text. She was able to use apps such as SketchBook and Crayola Create and Play in the art room. Other technology we use is a smart board type touch screen TV. it has a white board app where you can draw, paint and cut and paste with your finger. This student as well as many others have enjoyed using this tool.

Assessment of Learning

My elementary students are assessed based solely on their behavior and participation. I have several students with disabilities which prevent them from participating fully. I have provided them with accommodations and modifications which allow them to be successful. For example, one student is unable to sit at the table quietly and pay attention to a lesson, so I allow her to sit on the rug and play with art toys while i teach the lesson, she then comes to the table to do her version of the project and then goes back to the rug. I also modify the projects so that students of all ability levels can be successful.
