Students With Disabilities

I have had a student in the past with autism. The student is very positive and always trying to be active and involved in a variety of events. One of the main issues this student faces is dealing with the understanding and concept of "acting" and that individuals in plays and productions are putting on shows that are "not real". Sometimes my student will get lost in the role in which they are playing and will think the play is actual real life events, and then becomes too emotionally invested in the role as they cannot differentiate between reality and theater productions. However, we have a great support system within our class and there are a variety of peers that assist and help this individual understand the differences and nuisances that come with acting and pulling off a production such as plays and musicals performed for our school.

  • Describe at least one way you have used technology to meet the needs of a student with a disability in your music classroom. Be sure to identify or describe the specific technology and the student's disability. Share your response in the threaded discussion.

I have taught a student in the past that wanted to play and contribute an instrument to our school's band. However this particular student had bouts of autism and while they were a phenomenal musician, they would struggle at certain instructions and practices, while other students did not seem to have any issues at all. It took me having a clear understanding of their IEP and individual needs that I realized by introducing the technological assistance of a laptop for this student would greatly impact their achievement and success within the band. The student was having a hard time picking up instructions and technique from anyone that would just say and demonstrate in front of the entire class. What my student needed was a laptop in order to watch the technique and instruction being provided to the class, but in a manner that allowed them to rewind, watch, repeat, until this student had mastered the desired parts needed. Providing the technological assistance of a laptop not only impacted the individual student and their success, it allowed for an even greater participation and effort for the remainder of the school year. Something so subtle had a lasting impact and has stayed with me since it occurred.

Provide/Describe one or more examples of adapted or alternative assessments you have successfully used in the classroom for students with disabilities. Be sure to identify the student's disability.

Last year I had a student in my class that struggled to hold and accurately utilize their pen or pencil within my classroom due to their disability. The class had an assessment where they were required to draw and present their finished product in front of the entire class. Knowing the struggle and burden an assignment like this would place upon this particular learner, I altered my assessment to accommodate their needs. For this particular assessment, the student was allowed to create a clay model to show and present to the entire class. Altering the assessment in this manner allowed the student to not only till feel fully included, but it boosted their morale and success as they were excited and eager to participate. I definitely found this rewarding and beneficial to my classroom.
