Students with Disabilities

I had a student in my band program with a visual impairment. She was a great advocate for herself, as was her mother. We were able to enlarge all of her music in the concert setting and managed to use the students around her to give small visual or aural cues to assist when she couldn't see some of my conducting gestures (such as breathing, tapping tempo on her knee, etc.). She made the decision to join the pit during marching season so she wouldn't need to march on the field, but could still be involved in the activity. |

For my student with a visual impairment, we were able to get her an iPad where we uploaded her sheet music for concert band. She was able to enlarge her music and use a stylus to write in notes just as if she had actual sheet music. She was also able to complete music theory assignments with the class through the use of musictheory.net, which I ended up using to assessing understanding from the whole class instead of using the board. |

Assessment of Learning

I used a "pass-off" system to assess my students. Essentially, it is an individualized approach to the concepts we are learning. Students work at their own pace to achieve each of the concepts we learn as a class. Every student must perform for me each day wherever they are at and they receive feedback on their performance to either improve or "pass it off" and move onto the next assessment line. Students who need additional help or are moving particularly fast come before and after school to meet with me for small mini-private lesson sessions. |
