Students With Disabilities

I had a dance student who was deaf. She loved to move and was very expressive. I always made sure that when I spoke she could see me as she was a great lip reader. I checked in frequently (with our 'special/secret signal') to make sure she understood. Mid year she received a new device that allowed her to hear better. I turned up the bass in songs so that she could sense the pulse of the music. For our end of the year performance, we added in sign language to our piece. This created a wonderful bond between her and the others in class.

Option 1: I use Mnemonic instruction regularly in my classes: Letter with BASTE (body, action, space, time, energy). I also incorporate a visual cue with each of the letters which is helpful when first learning. I also do 'Pegword' regularly to help (get down low/reach with the toe/inner thigh to the sky). I also use Venn Diagrams when comparing/contrasting dance styles (ballet/hip hop). Peer Partners is also helpful not only for those who need assistance, but also provides a teaching/mentoring opportunity for others as it increases opportunities for communication and empathy.

In regards to quizes/tests in my dance class, I have a student with a visual impairment. I print out all of her assignments on different color paper so that it is easier for her to see/read. I also teach theatre where they were assessed on memorization of a monologue. My down-syndrome student had a condensed script to memorize so that it wasn't as overwhelming. It is definitely easy to adjust the length of this assignment based on student needs.
