Students with Disabilities

I used to teach at a "separate day school" for students who had been removed from their public school due to behavior issues. Most often these students were also diagnosed with a specific learning disability. One of my students had both an emotional/behavioral disability as well as a specific learning disability related to processing and speech. This 7th grader had challenges processing his emotions and would have verbal outbursts, etc in the classroom as well as struggle with very low self esteem. He also had difficulty completing work and could be challenged with assignments using fine motor skills. However, I had great success with this student when I demonstrated the steps to the project, then gave him a specific job in class, whether passing out materials, managing a work station to help other students with their artwork, or working with me as an assistant. These roles over time improved his self-esteem and helping him repeat certain steps of a project many times, which allowed for more confidence in the art process. |

1. Two of the strategies that could potentially be implemented in my classroom are Task Cards and Chaining. As an elementary art educator chaining is used as a way to build confidence with tools in my classroom especially with my students learning fine motor skills. Helping a child learn the correct pressure and positioning of a paintbrush, while initially grasping my hand for guidance then slowly repeating and releasing my guidance as they can confidence in the movements and positioning of the brush. Task cards could be a great way to allow for choice on a specific topic we are learning-for example types of line. Each task card could have a varied quantities or complexities in which line is used in their final piece.
2. Technology is used in my classroom with the addition of smart boards, document cameras, and ipads. Student who have difficulty with sustained attention are engaged with demonstrative videos or artist bio videos that help introduce our new subject matter. |

Using large grip writing and painting tools to help some of my students with their motor skills. Giving individual visual examples with step by step instructions for students with processing and attention disorders that can be kept at their desks. Allowing for extra time to complete projects. One of my students who has a processing disorder and speech delays and who also loves art is would benefit from preferential seating to help with visual focusing and ease of access to the teacher when she needs help, she also benefits for opportunity to have clarifying questions or one on one time with the teacher, as well as extra opportunity to practice the motor skills involved in the art project. |
