Students With Disabilities

I had a student in digital art class who had developmental delays and was not able to process or retain the many steps it took to use a complex program like photoshop. She was very creative and liked to come up with her own character designs so I modified her lessons to focus on repeating the tasks of turning her physically drawn characters into digital files that she would then paint in photoshop. The repetition of the task and the steps involved allowed her to become fluent in the process to the point where she could do them on her own with minor interventions from me, but it also kept her interest because she could challenge herself with more complex character designs as she vacate more confident with her digital painting skills.

Option 2: I have a student who struggles with attention issues. She is a gifted drawer, but gravitates toward anime as her style of choice. I have taught her different cartooning techniques with traditional mediums that she obviously enjoys, but it wasn't until I introduced her to using Procreate on the iPad and drawing directly on the screen with the apple pencil that she really lit up. She immediately jumped into adding color to her illustrations, different painting techniques, and adjusting pressure sensitivity for different brush effects. Her artwork came alive and she can now literally spend hours focusing on a single piece.

Assessment of Learning

I had a student with ODD (oppositional defiance disorder) who would outright refuse to do a lesson he didn't like from the beginning. He didn't want to lean any new styles or techniques that were outside of his comfort zone. I would often adapt the topic of his lesson to something he was agreeable to while still showing development in the skills I wanted him to learn. We would spend a lot of time evaluating his progress as he was creating the work and I would sneak in new technique lessons to help him accomplish what he wanted to achieve in the piece. He needed that review step of the work not turning out like he imagined before he was willing to accept that I might have a better method for him to use.
