I had a student in gr. K-5 with cerebral palsy. When we played recorders, she could only play with one hand. When the class progressed beyond her, she tried to play the songs on the xylophone. In our concert, she accompanied us with a different part and was very proud. I also gave her the option to research recorders and create a power point for the class to learn about the history. When we tested for "recorder karate belts", I adapted the skills she needed to pass in order to earn each belt. I learned that it takes time to prepare alternate lessons and instrumentation for a child with physical disabilities. I'm wishing now that I had done more for her.

I used learning centers over the past few weeks which allowed me the opportunity to work with 4-5 children on the ukulele. Everyone had so much fun working independently! The smart board was very engaging for a team game and allowed for peer assistance learning note values, student computers allowed them to watch a short video and then answer questions on a worksheet (which we later discussed as some struggled with this), students played musical twister to learn names of rhythm notes and others were on ipads doing ear training games or reading about Reggae music. We followed up with a class review of rhythm flashcards to check for understanding.

After our concert, we did self-evaluation and reflection with questions about the experience. It is always interesting to hear their perspective and share that with their parents as well. I have also asked students, "If you were the teacher, what would you say needs work on this?" and they love to make suggestions.

When I give a written quiz, students who receive help from our Resource Teacher are invited to take the test up to her room. This gives them additional time, less distractions and, if needed, she can read the questions to them. I also make every effort to read all questions aloud when first handing out a quiz. I walk around the room and check that everyone is able to understand the questions. I give hints too, as I want them to succeed.
