Students with Disabilities

As a STEAM Specialist, I am always using music and art in my lessons. As an elementary teacher, I have many students with disabilities. The wide range has allowed me to not only work with a variety of students but also create accommodations and modification if needed. One recent example is that of a Kinder student. She immigrated from Honduras and was immediately detained and placed into foster care. While in placement her foster parents realized that she may be deaf due to nonverbal communication. She was evaluated and now has hearing devices. She is not only learning the English language, but also sign language. At the age of 6 she has a positive attitude and tries her best. While in my glass last week, we were learning a song and dance about the life cycle of a butterfly. I needed to make sure that I had the sign language available for her. It was perfect because not only did she learn the signs, but the other students did too. It was beautiful! |

1. Describe how two of the strategies discussed could potentially be implemented in your classroom. Be sure to identify the two strategies by name, and describe how they could be used to address the student's disability. Share your response in the threaded discussion.
As a Media/technology teacher, I am using technology daily in the classroom. Specifically with my deaf student, I use a program on the iPad called HandsUP! ASL. It helps her with the concepts we are learning and be able to learn the vocabulary. She has a personal ASL teacher with her everyday, but this also gives a little extra that the aide can do with her while I ma teaching the vocabulary. |

1. Provide/Describe one or more examples of adapted or alternative assessments you have successfully used in the classroom for students with disabilities. Be sure to identify the student's disability. Share your response in the threaded discussion
As with all of my students with disabilities, I assess fair and equitably. It is very important to look at the IEP/504 plans before writing the lesson plans. With every 5E lesson plan, I plan to engage my students. On some occasions, the engage portion is a pre-assessment on what they already know. For example, this last unit on life cycles, The students were asked to draw a butterfly life cycle. This gave the chance for my ESE student with DS to draw a picture and explain to me the parts. It also allowed me to assess what my deaf student knew about life cycles. Within that same unit, for the summative assessment, I had my students create a butterfly life cycle using nature. They did this in groups of 2 and were able to express what they know creatively and verbally. |
