Students With Disabilities

I have an SLD student in my Digital Design class who is overwhelmed with processing detailed instructions. I make sure to chunk the information into smaller steps for him and give positive feedback as he completes them. When the task involves creativity, it also helps for me to show him a visual sample of possible results – which he can feed off of.

I also provide opportunity for improvement. Just recently this student turned in a design that was quite off the mark of what was asked for. Since I had already used my previously mentioned strategies, I involved the parent in assisting by sending her a copy of what was turned in, along with the directions and all that I had done so far to help him. She was positive in her response and we ultimately were successful in having the student turn in the correct format for the assignment.

In Digital Design, there are a variety of methods that can be used to learn a skill. Students are given the choice in my class to learn with the method that best suites them:

· Many tutorials are offered in text format online and video format online – students can choose.
· Further breakdowns can have the students listening to the video tutorial online while play closed captions, just reading the closed captions, or just listening.
· Text based instructions will be offered in print if desired, or can be used online.
· Additionally – I will offer students to work along with me, instead of using the online tutorial where I can stop and assist as needed.
All of these methods are offered for the same skill being learned.

I have developed graphic organizers to assist with learning – two of my favorite’s are the ones I created for the Unit on Copyright and the unit on Computer Components. Information is provided on the topics and presented in class and then students are allowed to collaborate and complete the graphic organizers, showing a deeper understanding of the material and providing a visual chart of the summarized information and how it relates.

I had a student who was permitted more time on taking state assessments. At the end of Digital Design, this student was to sit for a certification exam. I submitted the required documentation to the certification testing site and followed up on all contacts, parent, ESE case manager, and the testing site to make sure additional time was given. The student had failed the exam the first time without the accommodation, however passed after the accommodation was granted. He was very proud to achieve this.
