With a greater number of students appearing in our community with Austism Spectrum Disorder, I have found the need to make accomidations to lessen stress and/or triggers that might be upsetting to students. I have one-on-one discussions of the tasks to be performed (if clarification is necessary), allow additional time in homeroom class during morning work, etc, or simplify lessons to lessen stress for students. |

Two strategies I can use in my Art room would be Task and Graphic Organizers. I like the idea of using Task Cards with students with ADD, for example, because the cards break each task down into a small, manageable and clearly written chunk. Upon completion of one task, students can then move ahead at the pace appropriate. Often times explaining the entire concept or lesson to the class does not assist or reach students who work well with smaller tasks to complete. Working with graphic organizers like the Venn and Semantic Diagram can give small group discussion among different styles of learners the opportunity to all feel like they are part of the discussion and able to add a piece, fact, opinion, art concept to the diagram. |

In past experiences with students who are nonverbal, I have used white board to small group discussion for students to share input and opinions. A different example I have used is to orally give a quiz to a student with disabilities in processing or reading/writing challenges. Students have the same quiz and information but have the opportunity to communicate knowledge in a way that better supports their skills. |
