Students with Disabilities

I had a student in a piano class who had an orthopedic impairment on one hand. He was only able to use his thumb and pinky. This became a challenge when we began learning chords. I started by encouraging him to play the notes of the chord that sounded the best to him, which encouraged his ear, and that he could reach with those fingers. When he felt discomfort in his thumb, I encouraged him to play some of the chord with his right hand or just one note of the chord. He adapted each piece to what sounded good to him and excelled beautifully. He inspired me as his teacher!

Option 2: Describe at least one way you have used technology to meet the needs of a student with a disability in your music classroom. Be sure to identify or describe the specific technology and the student's disability. Share your response in the threaded discussion

In my choral and keyboard classes I use an app called Blooket. I can create my own games based on any level of students to reinforce anything music including, note names, vocabulary, key signatures, note values, instruments, just to name a few. With some of my students with disabilities, I use peers to play the games with them. The students answer questions and do recognition by competing with each other. It has been beneficial in building music skills and reinforcing music concepts taught.

Assessment of Learning

I have a student in my keyboard class who is very low functioning and doesn't remember the names of the notes on the staff, however, several weeks into the class I discovered that she has an amazing ear for music and can hear the piece 3-4 times (depending on the difficulty) then is able to play it back after practicing. My keyboard students are assessed weekly by playing for me. She has songs ready every week and sometimes asks to play them for the class. Also, a few students with anxiety issues prefer me to put headphones on to hear them, which also works well for the assessment.
