Students with Disabilities

One of my classes is a group of 5 students with emotional/behavioral disorders. This group of students gets frustrated easily and needs calm encouragement. One student in particular gets frustrated when his artwork is not perfect. Even when I give him positive feedback he still gets frustrated with himself. I have found that usually after some positive feedback and some quiet time alone he is ready to come back to the group and continue working. |

Tools And Strategies

One strategy that I could use in my art classroom would be chaining. Chaining breaks the assignment down into smaller steps. This is the perfect strategy for directed drawing and many other assignments. Another strategy that can be used is Peer Partners. When students have a peer that is working closely by them they can turn to them for additional support as needed. |

Assessment of Learning

My students are assessed by the completion of individual projects. I have one class of students with intellectual disabilities and have found that many of them have difficulty holding crayons or markers. They are better able to use a paint brush for their art work. so, while I still provide projects for them to practice holing things like crayons and markers, they are given more opportunities to use paint either with a q-tip or a brush. This has helped them to feel more successful in art. |
