Students With Disabilities

This year, I had a student in my ceramics class with autism. She loved to draw and really wanted to work with clay too. She was able to create most of the projects the students were making. She was very engaged in the process of creating, but needed one on one assistance. I was able to partner her with another student to assist her. We often incorporated themes in her artwork to reflect her likes and interests.

One way I have used technology to meet the needs students with disabilities is by allowing students to use the computer to create a design of their potential project. Some students have started in the paint program, but with peer partners have been able to advance to photoshop to create their designs. This software has allowed students with disabilities greater success by using the computer for drawing instead of traditional drawing media and tools.

I recently had an a student with autism in my ceramics class. I used a journal and a portfolio for assessing the student. The journal was a great place to get an idea of where the student was in terms of the project and to allow the student to reflect and modify projects when needed. Throughout the course the student created a portfolio of works. Ongoing feedback was provided for the portfolio, this allowed me to determine what progress had been made during each unit of instruction.
