Think of a student with a disability you have now, or have had in the past. Identify their disability. Describe the way in which their disability affected their learning. Describe at least one or more ways you successfully accommodated or modified instruction for this student. Share your response in the threaded discussion
I have a student in Kindergarten who has developmental & speech delay and ADD/ADHD. Their disability affects in many ways; lack of focus, losing interest in subject matter quickly, difficult with transitions. The student also has outburst that affect their classes learning environment. To accommodate/modify instruction for this student I ignore behaviors, check in frequently, give the student jobs, compliment their work, ask the questions to stay focused, and keep them close to me with a friend who is a good leader. Giving the student jobs has worked well. The student is working on "this then that" I try that a lot and offer simple choices to help with behavior. |

I use technology for every lesson. I project examples, texts, demonstrations, and videos. I project example art for students who are visually impaired. It’s so nice to be able to move around the photo/example and zoom in on parts we want to look at more closely rather than holding a photo or book up closer to our faces. I also use the ELMO document camera for all my demonstrations. This helps me show different angles in real time and repeat needed steps on a large screen. I can zoom in for visually impaired students. This is helpful for students who have ADD/ADHD who get distracted. It's easy to show steps one at a time for a constant back and forth check in. I do one part of the demo, an “I do, then you do” type. |

Assessment of Learning

I have a 4th grade student who is language impaired. This student also has behavior issues and has a BIP. The student frequently gets distracted and walks around the room. Fourth grade students write artist statements with their artworks. The students have to write about the elements and principles they used in their art. The students use a laminated sheet of the Elements and principles on their table. For this particular student we would get up and move around the room and go to all the different posters of the elements and principles and talk about if they used them or not in their artwork instead of sitting and writing. We walk around with the artwork and I give the student as much time as needed to talk about the art and what he used. |
