Students With Disabilities

I taught a middle school art class with a mixture of general education and adaptive students. The students from the special education section had a variety of disabilities ranging from physical to intellectual. I had to fashion different art instruments to support them with practicing technique and mastering the standards. I was lucky to have their para to assist me with their learning. Some of them enjoyed the class, but many of them were frustrated. Having the two different sections of students was extremely difficult for me when it came to pacing and learning expectations. I had behavior issues with both sections and a variety of learning levels.

I use a computer to deliver learning modules of the lessons. My students can learn at their own pace. It also helps them to move through the assignment while refencing the guided notes. A few of the students use the auditory accessibility features of the computer to read. They can also enlarge the print if they are visually impaired. My students are also engaged on the computers. It is a platform they are familiar utilizing, so they are more open to try new things. When we do sections in studio art (paint, clay...etc.), they reluctant to create. When students are using the computers to design art, they don't get as upset when they make a mistake. This allows them to experiment and learn new concepts.

I experienced success by creating visual aids to help students with assessments. This may include photos or samples of the various steps in creating the art. Using visual aids help all students with daily routines, CHAMPS and instructions. I would also provide flexibility with materials and tools. If I was assessing their understanding of the color wheel, I would let them choose what type of art they wanted to use (color pencils, crayons, paint, collage etc.) I had a sensory bin station that allowed students to decide what they wanted to use. I also have different size crayons and paint brushes for the students to use.
