I had a student in my dance class a few years ago with Down Syndrome. On the first day of school I noticed she grativated toward the back of the classroom so I would sit/stand close to her during the warm up part of class. She would get upset during certain exercises she found difficult and would often quit so I started encouraging her frequently and as often as possible to build a relationship with positive reinforcement. Since there was an odd number of students in the class I would always let her be the "line leader" and we would go across the floor first together so she could be my partner. By the end of the year another dancer in class befriended her and she no longer wanted to go acrooss the floor with me or sit in the back. edited by A H on 8/5/2021 |

Option 2: I noticed at the beginning of the pandemic last April 2020, one of the strongest dancers in my class just completely shut down and was not turning in, completing, or even logging onto Teams for assignments. I eventually foound out from the department head that he was struggling with severe anxiety and depression in regards to perfomring in from of a camera and would completely shut down... so much so that he was hospitalized and eventually medicated. For the remainder of the year I have him the option to even record the choreogaphy with his back towards the camera or I gave him the option to find video examples from youtube of other dancers, actors, musicians that demonstrated the learning goals for the week and respond to their performance via a written critiques. This allowed him to watch and repsond instead of perfrom and respond while still obtaining the information the rest of the class was exploring. |

I had an autistic student in my tap dance class last year that had trouble writing out repsonses whether it was an exit ticket or a vocabulary/unit quiz that I frequently gave the class to show their mastery & undertsanding of concepts covered weekly. To adapt to his learning needs I allowed the student to meet seperately before and/or after class to physically demonstrate the steps/vocabulary, this allowed him to show his undertsanding of the class material without having to write it out. I also gave him multicple choice questions instead of short repsonse or allowed him to draw a picture to fulfill the answer. edited by A H on 8/5/2021 |
