Students with Disabilities

I had a middle school cello student who had a physical disability making it necessary to play the cello backwards. I had multiple conversations with the family and the final decision, based on those conversations, was that the student did not want the cello restrung in reverse, but instead preferred to play the cello as it was. The student simply played the cello in reverse. I changed my terminology from 'right hand' to 'bow hand', and from 'left hand' to 'instrument hand'. I also made sure to refer to a 'down bow' being from 'frog to tip' instead of 'to the right', and an 'up bow' being from 'tip to frog' instead 'to the left'. I also worked with the student on which way was most comfortable to hold the bow, and the most comfortable sitting location in the classroom. The student was quite successful. |

- Describe at least one way you have used technology to meet the needs of a student with a disability in your music classroom. Be sure to identify or describe the specific technology and the student's disability. Share your response in the threaded discussion.
- I used a couple of different websites during the last school year that allowed me to set different levels of music theory training (musictheory.net) and allowed the students to choose different levels of music theory training based on their own needs (tonesavvy.com). It allowed for the more advanced students, or students who wanted a challenge, to set the levels higher. It gave the less experienced students, or students who were struggling, to set their levels a bit lower, making for less frustrating work for all involved. I also listened to student feedback to determine how many examples they thought they should complete. The students became a part of the assignment.

- Describe an example of adapted assessment you have successfully used in the fine arts classroom for students with disabilities.
- I had a guitar student who broke their arm and was unable to play for a couple of months. I had them complete ear training exercises and fretboard notation exercises that corresponded with what the other students in the class were completing. I also give my students the opportunity to retake any playing test for a higher score, as well as the opportunity to either play the test in person or submit a recording.
