I taught elementary Art for several years. One year, I had a visually impaired 5th grade student. She came to class accompanied by a para, who would assist her with her projects. She loved Art class and was always eager to participate. I would have the materials she would use that day ready for her at her table, so she could start working as soon as my introduction was done. I often had her use Wikki Stix, so she could create "drawings" out of these, as well as multiple types of clay and rubbing plates. I provided a variety of options for her to use and it was wonderful to see her take pride in her work. |

I had a hard of hearing student in one of my second grade classes. Whenever his class had Art, his classroom teacher would provide me with a lanyard that had a special microphone attached to it that was also connected to his hearing aids. In addition, he sat close to the front of the room in order for me to keep good eye contact with him. |

I had a student with hearing loss in one ear. He was very self-conscious about it and did not want attention drawn to his hearing aid. I sat him in the front of the room where I could frequently have eye contact with him to check for understanding. I provided visual examples of the projects and walked around to each table to provide help to anyone who needed it. This gave me a chance to check his (and everyone's) work and assist where necessary. |
