I taught a student with autism. As I focused on characterization and movement on stage, I placed the student in a pantomime scene. He eagerly participated and eventually went on to perform at a local Junior competition. He was paired with a student to create a scene a basic scene with a beginning, middle and end. This allowed him time to move around and to actively contribute to the storyline of his scene. His enthusiasm and eagerness to develop the scene grew with complexity. Furthermore, he felt included and encouraged to express art in his way on his time.

In my theatre class, I use differentiated instruction and grouping strategies. My students are provided with multiple opportunities to work with different groups and partners. This allows my most apprehensive students to engage with their peers as well as to collaborate on improvisational scenes that extend into constructed scripts for stage presentations.

I had a student with autism. He pantomimed his the stories read in class. This allowed him to use movement and to express his understanding of the storyline. He also enjoyed expressing himself and feeling included in the dramatic activities.

In my classes, I use sound cues to help my students to remember the next scene or step in their presentations. I also use cooperative learning to assist students who are feeling overwhelmed by the task. We are currently working on a play and it is incredible to see how the students work together to assist their peers who get confused or anxious. This provides my students with support and care through and in their dramatic presentations.
