  • Think of a student with a disability you have now or in the past. Describe ways in which their disability affected their learning in your class.

This year in my kindergarten class I have a student with a hearing impairment. Beginning of the year she did not have her hearing aides. So phonics was tough for her. She did well with reading lips, but of course with phonics, it is all about sounds. So phonics was done in small group with her, where I could show her how my lips move, where my tongue was placed etc. Good news for us now, she has her hearing aides. I still sit her where she can see my lips and I was given a bluetooth microphone that goes directly to her hearing aides.

Being in Kindergarten any visual is very helpful for those who can't read yet. But one year I had a student who was ASD. He was very bright but used pictures to help himself communicate and helped him with knowing what to do. For center rotations I had a powerpoint that had students pictures along with the center they were doing. So everyday my student saw his picture with the picture of his partner for the day, then next to that a picture of what center they were doing together, such as computers, word work, STEM work, etc.

  • Describe an example of adapted assessment you have successfully used in the fine arts classroom for students with disabilities.

This year I have a student with a hearing impairment. She did not have her hearing aides in the beginning of the year, we have them now. Unfortunately, mom has said her hearing is just going to keep getting worse. Her speech is distorted so sounds do not sound how they are suppose to so when I test the kids on their sounds and making sure they can say them. For this students, instead of having her tell me the sound, I make the sound for her and she then points to it on an alphabet strip.
