Students with Disabilities

I have a student in kindergarten that has difficulty with gross motor functions. I know that she is receiving Occupational Therapy in school. We dance a lot in the Kindergarten general music class and sometimes she falls. I think that moving her body to the beat of the music provides her with opportunities to develop gross motor function as well as participate with her classmates. She smiles when she is dancing and her smile is priceless. |

Tools and Strategies

One strategy that I use in the classroom is story mapping. Many songs have a story associated to them (e.g. Peter and the Wolf). Mapping the story structure helps students remember the story. I also use graphic representation of the high/low pitches and long/short notes. With the use of these strategies, students develop a visual representation of the music and can begin to construct an aural representation as well. |

Assessment of Learning

I currently have a student with an anxiety disorder. I gave a summative assessment of her recorder playing. She was very nervous so I gave her the assessment after the class was over so she didn't have to perform in front of the other students thus decreasing her anxiety level. She performed well and received a B. I was very proud of her and told her so. She smiled! |
