Students With Disabilities

I have a theatre student with lower body orthopedic issues. Moving up and down stairs and platforms on our set would be very painful and slow for this student. I find ways to block this student so his character can safely maneuver through scenes while also keeping the story intact.

Option 1: Describe how two of the strategies discussed could potentially be implemented in your classroom. Be sure to identify the two strategies by name, and describe how they could be used to address the student's disability. Share your response in the threaded discussion.

Cubing: I use cubing for differentiated group discussions and activities, specifically when digging into scene work and plays. This is a great way to activate student participation and interest for each student's readiness level.

OneNote: I use the OneNote digital note-taking app to help all my students organize their music, scripts, scene work, character analysis, and critiques. It's been very helpful for my unorganized students and a great way to collaborate among student partners with added teacher input. My students separate class notes into different notebooks and pages within those notebooks. They have added audio notes, linking, and hand-drawn notes into their pages.

  • Option 2: Think of a student with a disability you have now (or have had in the past). Identify their disability. Review the Alternative Assessment Checklist and select two or more options that could potentially benefit this student in assessing his or her learning. Share your response in the threaded discussion.

I have a student suffering from extreme anxiety in my musical theatre production class. I use weekly script annotation checks instead of biweekly so this student doesn't get overwhelmed. He can have his partner review his blocking and character annotations before submitting his script. I always give a weekly overview of the music, script pages and/or scene work we will cover so he and everyone else in the class is comfortable knowing what is on the radar that week and I refer back to the schedule every day. Lastly, we have an agreed signal if he needs to take a breather and go get a drink of water to unwind.
