When I taught middle school band there was a student with severe behavioral issues who also had an IEP and was on medicated for ADHD. He had problems sitting still in class and would disrupt class because he was bored. After working with the IEP administrator, she developed a sheet of goals for each of classes that included visuals. At the end of each class, teachers initialed next to goals he had successfully completed and marked comments/suggestions next to goals not completed that day. The total number of successful goals completed each week was tied to a reward system from both the parents and the IEP administrator, although I am not sure what the exact rewards were.

I am currently a graduate assistant working with concert and marching bands. One of the undergraduate students has a visual impairment and cannot see music as it is regularly printed. It may seem like a small and/or obvious technological tool, but we are able to use the copy machine to enlarge her music to a size she can more easily read.

When I was teaching middle school band, one of the class requirements was to play scales individually during class. I had one student with an IEP that included a social disorder and an anxiety disorder- the mere idea of having to perform this task in the front of the class was more than unappealing, it was enough to send this student into a panic attack. I allowed this student to make an appointment to perform their scales for me before or after school so they did not have to do it in front of the class and allowed their participation and performance with the large ensemble to cover the "performing in public and in front of peers" aspect of the teaching goals.
