During my internship, four years ago, I had a student on the autism spectrum. He was a wonderfully excited young man who's schedule forced him to be in the beginning treble voice chorus. My cooperating teacher and I worked to create his own part in the music for him to work on when he went on frequent family trips and for individual attention in class. This helped his peers to learn how to sing against other parts and gave him leading role in our concert at the end of the semester.

One strategy I could implement in my classroom is the mnemonic devices strategy for helping students to remember concepts that are difficult to master, like note names or circle of fifths. I have some of my own that I learned from my teachers growing up, but I would be very interested to see others either from other teachers or student created ones.

Another strategy I could implement is the Guided Notes strategy. When working through Music History information, I could use guided notes to make sure that everyone is understanding the big ideas and give students a way to be actively engaged instead of just reading a paragraph.

I once had a piano student who had broken her hand at the end of the summer. I continued to test her playing with the right hand and expected her to complete the Bass clef theory assignments so she could continue to learn the content needed. When she got her cast off, she returned to the beginning of the book and worked through these songs she had already learned the right hand and excelled quickly.
