As a visual art teacher for students with special needs and disability my biggest challenge through the years have been figuring out how to accommodate and modify lessons for my students with visual impairments. I have learned to get creative with using tactile items such as manipulatives, playdoh, bolded fonts/lines, enlarged images, pipe cleaners, wiki stix, puff paint, etc. As challenging it has been, it's so rewarding when I find ways and items students with visual impairments like to create with. |

I have a student with visual impairment. It was challenging to teach art and get them to participate. Because of their disability, I had to make some accommodations and modifications for my student. For example, if I had something printed out, I would make sure they were printed bigger and bolder. They also used different materials such as 3-D models of shapes, wiki stix, and play dough. |

In my classroom, students who are non-verbal with ASD and/or have a speech disorder use IPads as a communication devices. There are applications that have certain words programed for them to use. They also have GoTalks, which are also communication devices that have PECS. They students use their devices to communicate their wants/needs and their knowledge. I use them to create choices for my students, for example, to choose the paint colors they want for their art work. |

In my classroom, I use a checklist assessment. The checklist consist of tasks the students are to complete. Then, you check off whether they completed them (independent, participatory, supported.) I also have created Vizzle quizes and exit tickets. My students have visual/hearing impairments, Speech disorders, have CP, autism, intellectual disabilities, and Down Syndrome to name some so I have to make as many accommodations and modifications to fit each students needs. |
