Students With Disabilities

I've had several students with autism in my performance programs. They each enjoyed being part of the ensemble, making friends, and singing/acting. Their parents were very involved, which helped immensely. I also had a student in a wheelchair (degenerative disorder) who was able to participate in dance choreography with the assistance of her cast-mates. We had a conversation about what she wanted to do, and what she was comfortable with. We ended up decorating her chair with sequins and feathers, and she was a part of the entire show. |

Option 2 response: I have 2 hearing impaired students. I use an amplifier for music, create recordings along with written lyrics and dialogue, and use plenty of video references to help reinforce what they are able to hear and do. I post everything on Google Classroom for the entire class to utilize. It works well for all my visual learners, as well as my 2 students. |

"Provide/Describe one or more examples of adapted or alternative assessments you have successfully used in the classroom for students with disabilities. Be sure to identify the student's disability."
I had a student who is blind and has a degenerative disease that requires her to stay in a wheelchair during the school day. I often paired her with a peer buddy who would help her navigate through scene work. I sometimes had her do an original interpretation of the assigned performance. And when we did movement work, I gave her verbal cues to follow along with arm choreography. She did very well with the class and enjoyed it very much. |
