I have a section of students who are a part of the modified curriculum/ behavior modification unit who visit my classroom with their peers. In the older section grades 3-5 there is a third grader with ASD and other health impairments. Holding a pencil and drawing is not something he enjoys and often causes out bursts of behavior. On a recent assignment, I met with him outside of his class time so he could choose his option for the drawing portion of the assignment, he chose his animal, I then drew the outline and during class he added color and created a pattern by using foam stickers. He was able to complete this task entirely independently without behavior outbursts or frustration. |

I use peer partners in my classroom. I have a class of students from the modified curriculum classroom that join a general education classroom for their art time. I have paired students from general education with the modified curriculum students. The gen ed student prompts their peer on correct use of materials and steps in the assignment. I also use self-evaluation and reflection with my students for both their assignments and behavior choices. I want my students to own their art and actions in the art room and understand that they can grow as artists. |

I have a group of students who come to my room from the self contained ASD unit. Most of them are limited verbal so I ask them questions with two or three choices and they answer by touching my hand or pointing to their choice. I usually will start the rest of the class and then go check in with those students to check their understanding. For the most part the rest of my students answer short exit tickets or I conduct short interviews while they work. |
