I have had a student with hearing loss a few years ago in theatre classes and was able to adapt to his needs. In dance class, I was sure he was near the music source and myself as much as possible. I made sure I was facing him when I spoke and he was able to follow along to physical cues just fine. In musical theatre and singing classes, we worked specifically on ear training exercises using the keyboard. That way, he was able to visualize pitch along with the sound. He is now pursuing musical theatre in college.

We are all using technology now more than ever while teaching hybrid during the pandemic. Meeting the specific needs of our kids both in person and online is paramount. One way I've used technology for students needing additional support and more scaffolding during a lesson is to provide additional resources on our google classroom. Usually, this is a video of broken down choreography in chunks, slowly, with counts, with music, etc. so students have access to the choreography in many different ways. Using our webcam, tripod and projectors, we are able to see each student dance and they are able to see me whether in class or recorded. Video links to original choreography from broadway shows are also helpful so they can see the movement within the actual show.

For one of my students with an IEP, I made an alteration to a written choreography assignment. She is a very visual learner which is great for dance class, but translating movement into words was challenging for her. So, we worked together as she went through the movement sequences on her own, I guided her in the words she chose to describe them. Then, I helped her organize the dance phrases into phrases of words. They ended up being grouped in a way that was visually helpful for her on the page as well, organizing the movement into its parts.
