I have a 2nd grader who has LI and OI disabilities. She is wheelchair bound and she can barely speak above a whisper but she loves to sing! Though she has limited movement with her arms and hands she has a strong grip. I found using hand bells with an adjusted grip worked well for her. When the class would sing a scale she would provide our tuning blocks for whatever note(s) we were focusing in on for that day. She really developed an ear.

  • Describe at least one way you have used technology to meet the needs of a student with a disability in your classroom. Be sure to describe the specific technology and how it assisted the student with a disability.
My student with LI (Her vocal chords are are damaged and she can only speak above a whisper) I set her up with a lavalier microphone so that she could be heard more clearly when participating in discussions with the class. That simple piece of technology changed how her peers were able to interact with her which in turned made her more confident when attempting to answer questions.

  • Describe an example of adapted assessment you have successfully used in the fine arts classroom for students with disabilities

When introducing new vocabulary words/terms to my self-contained ESE (7 students all with different disabilities) I find writing the word/term on different textiles ( one the board, computer screen with animation, colored construction paper), adding an action with the new word/term, and singing the word/term on a pitch.
At the end of the lesson when I give a mini assessment of those terms, they mimic using one or more of the ways that I have presented the vocabulary. My students specifically love the combination of the action and singing on a pitch.
