I have several students that are on the autistic spectrum. Many of the students excel within my music classroom. Some of the alternative strategies that could be used are the text cards and teacher direct observation. I have also used differentiated instruction by allowing students to use differing instruments for varying activities.

The use of music centers would be a great strategy in offering differentiated instruction to my students. Through various tiered activities, students can accomplish the same goal in different ways. Another strategy that I use within my music classroom is graphic organizers. Within my school, we use various Thinking Maps within the classroom: Tree Map for instrument classification, Bubble Map for parts, etc.

I had a student with intellectual disability. When working on classroom xylophones, I modified the student's activity to be played on a two note bass note xylophone. This allowed the student to be successful within the music classroom.
