I currently have a student with a hearing impairment in my percussion class. A hearing impairment affects any musician in how they are going to learn. In the class, she has to constantly watch demonstrations from myself and classmates working with her to make sure she is executing desired rhythm patterns and rudiments. She relies on sight to match up the feel of what she is seeing versus what she is physically executing. As she learns new things, she then connects the physical execution to continue to develop mastery.

Peer partner strategy is used very frequently in my general guitar class. This strategy helps to pair a student with a disability with a student who has a firm understanding of the lesson. The strategy is beneficial to both parties, giving an alternative learning experience to help a student who is struggling, and it is helping the other student learn how to model behavior or even adapt tiered strategies of their own.
While teaching a beginning level general guitar class, mnemonic instruction is a must. Not only is mnemonic instruction is used to help memorize the names of the guitar strings, but it is also helpful to learn the names of the lines and spaces before the students have the chance to start writing them in their music.

Describe an example of adapted assessment you have successfully used in the fine arts classroom for students with disabilities.
Multiple times I must adapt ongoing assessments in my general guitar class. Based on observations, I have had to break certain assessments apart and begin constructing the assessment in multiple tiers. This gives the students a little smaller hurdle, but it also gives the students more points to celebrate.
