Students with Disabilities

Several years ago, I had a student with a hearing impairment who wore hearing aids in both of his ears. The first year I had him as a student, he wore his hearing aids and I would place him toward the front of the room to aid with his hearing. I would also make sure to face him so he could watch my face while I was giving instruction, and would put up many visual aids to help him. The second year I had him as a student, he brought a device with him and each teach would wear it around their neck to amplify their voices into his hearing aids. That greatly helped his learning and allowed him to clearly hear the teacher instruction without hearing all the background noise through his hearing aids.

Tools and Strategies

In the music classroom I have used strategies to aid in student learning and achievement.

Chaining is a strategy I have used many times when introducing students to new concepts. Breaking down a task into smaller steps really helps all students at times. Building on a concept is a vital part of music and chaining ensures that students understand each part broken down. For a student with a disability that makes it difficult for them to remember or organize multi-step tasks, this chaining strategy allows the teacher to give meaningful aid so that the students can master the task and a slower pace.

Mnemonic Instruction helps all students learn note names on staff and other music concepts. For students just starting to read notation, mnemonic tricks aid in their learning and retention of information. For a student with disabilities, this type of instruction can be something that they will remember easier that just looking at a staff and naming the note.

Assessment of Learning

Several years ago, there were a handful of students in fifth grade that had IEPs or 504 Plans needing testing accommodations. The students had learning disabilities, and speech and language impairements. The students were able to do their music tests with extended time and had the option to take the test with their ESE teacher in an alternate setting or to take it in the music room. I would also get the study guide materials to the ESE teacher two weeks in advance to send home and to work with the student at school.
