Students With Disabilities

I currently teach high school theatre to a student with an orthopedic impairment who is in a wheelchair. She is a very social student who does everything the other students do. I just have to make accomodations for her wheelchair like getting the key to use the lift to get her onstage so that she could perform like the other students and allow her to leave class early to get to her other classes.
I also have had several students with specific learning disabilities, particularly dyslexia. Instead of requiring them to copy notes or diagrams from the board or my TV, I allow them to take a picture of the notes on their phone and let them have it out to copy from at their seats. I also give them more time to read a script. They tend to shine more in improvisation scenes instead of scenes where they have to read from a script, so I make sure they have those opportunities.

Tools And Strategies

I am combining both of the options in this discussion forum. One strategy that I have used was combining peer partners with use of technology. I paired an "average" student with a student who typically performed at a below average level or had some type of disability. They had the task of using their cell phones to record each other talking about him/herself and then to write a paragraph after watching him/herself on the video describing his/her strengths and weaknesses in speaking. Not only was this effective in helping the students to see areas they need to work on in performing, it helped them to see areas they are good at. Usually the partners ended up becoming friends after sharing this experience as well.

Assessment of Learning

I teach high school theatre. The summative assessment for my costuming unit includes taking a written exam and constructing a costume. For my ESE students, I allow them to create a costume portfolio instead of either the exam or the costume itself if they do not feel that they can complete either of them. In the portfolio, students can use technology to gather a series of costumes from different time periods from online pictures or they can draw the costume designs themselves. I have found these portfolios to be very creative and inspirational to the rest of the students when they are presented by the student creator.
