Students with Disabilities

I have a first grade student this year with emotional and behavior disability. Her emotional outbursts and social interaction has made it increasibly difficult to concentrate on any learning objective. Her class comes in after lunch and recess so she often is rather upset and emotion regarding her peers. It can be rather disruptive to the class but we are working to help her and allow for instruction to occur. I have assigned her a seat close to my point of instruction and paired her with a peer that helps direct her in assistance of various steps in the art making process. I allow movement and flexible seating which has helped her control her high energy level. I find breaking instruction in small chunks, offering visual clues and drawing clear instruction visible on the board has helped her minimize frustration. I will often adapt instruction if I see anxiety building in her as she struggles or provide assistance and praise for her strengths.

Tools And Strategies

I find many of the mentioned strategies very helpful to meet the various needs and interests of my students. I like my students to plan before they create so perhaps some of the graphic organizers will help plan thoughts and identify important points. I also want to offer a variety of method for demonstrating knowledge by providing various learning centers with assignments that meet range of ability. I strongly think students benefit from self reflection and have encouraged this through the use of technology when they upload their work to online art portfolios. Peer sharing and support is also vital to active participation and engagement in my classroom. Encouraging deeper understanding and class participation can occur through the use of the cubes and cards. Thanks for the tips.

Assessment of Learning

I have done some pre assessments using tools like kahoot to gauge the knowledge of my students so I can see how much they know. As the lessons progress and I see them again the following week I check for understanding to see what they recall or what I need to modify. I do like to check the reflection statements that the children write to see if they can apply some of the concepts into the text to prove understanding. Yet I also feel that a quick exit ticket or exit gesture in the form of a playful game such as what's the magic password to check for understanding is beneficial. It is quick and informative and I can modify the level of difficulty based on the child.
