Students with Disabilities

I've had many students with disabilities over the years. Marcus was one of my favorites. He was mostly very happy to participate in all that he was able and I did my very best to make it such that he could do the "things" himself. That was a big deal to him. It was a real joy teaching him. His walking skills and some muscular coordination gave him a real hard time, but he kept at it. |

I once had a hearing impaired student in the elementary music classroom. We were watching a video that was rather intense in its drumming and to assist this student in feeling the effect. I connected a 100 watt monitor and put it in his lap with the speaker against his belly/chest. He could feel every pulse. I think he liked it. |

Assessment of Learning

Assessing my child musicians development is as usual, constant. Digging in to solve musical problems is a difficult one to assess unless one has a good rubric and goal in mind. Often, it is the process that is mostly assessed in my students. The student with disabilities is evaluated upon their taking effort to accomplish the musical experience. |
