Students with Disabilities

I taught a student with severe physical disabilities and speech disabilities (non-verbal). He was in 4th grade. His disability affected his learning when we began playing the recorder because he was not able to use the fine motor skills needed to move his fingers. I was able to adapt his instruction and found he was able to hold a mallet and would play the notes on the glockenspiel with the other students on recorder. I also adapted his instruction in movement since he was in a wheelchair and would have him play an instrument part on the drum to keep him involved in a way that reached his needs. |

Tools and Strategies

One of the strategies I could implement in my classroom is task analysis. I can use this for my 3rd-5th grade students when learning the recorder by breaking down the steps to practice. I could have them read the rhythms, then read the notes, then finger the notes with their recorder on their chin, then play the notes. I think this break down would help my students understand what is happening in the music.
The second strategy I can implement is graphic organizers. I like the idea of using a semantic map. I can use this when teaching students about timbre or instrument families. We can put the instrument or the instrument family in the center and put describing words on the outside. This strategy will give students a visual representation of timbre that I feel may be missing when we learn the term timbre. |

Assessment of Learning

Option 1: Provide/Describe one or more examples of adapted or alternative assessments you have successfully used in the music classroom for students with disabilities. Be sure to identify the student's disability. Share your response in the threaded discussion.
I had a 2nd grade student who was selectively mute. I used alternative assessments with him such as letting him point to or write out his answers to questions to demonstrate his understanding. If students were practicing rhythms, he would use body percussion or an instrument to demonstrate his knowledge. |
