Students with Disabilities

I have a student with a physical disability. His arms are short and his hands cannot grasp well. I use an adaptive instrument holder for using a triangle and hand drum. He likes to try to play instruments on his own, but will ask for help when needed or sometimes modify his playing style on his own. He is now playing guitar by putting his left hand on top of the guitar neck instead of under and around it to play simple modified chords. He strums the guitar with his whole hand instead of his thumb or a pick. |

Option 1: Reply: I really like the idea of cubing for a story song. An example was used of Don Gato. I would use it for A Frog Went A-Courtin which we have learned this year. I think all students in the class would understand the story song better at whatever readiness level. Another strategy I liked is differentiated assignments based on level of complexity. I liked the music example of learning the notes of the treble staff. I think students could work in pairs or individually and assignments can be given according to their readiness level. |

Option 1: I have a fifth grade student with dyslexia and she needs to sit near instruction. She needs accommodations for testing by having her test read to her and also extra time for test taking. A paraprofessional would sit with her for her end of year exam. |
