Students with Disabilities

I have a student in my jazz band who plays guitar. Unfortunately, he was not a band student prior to joining jazz band so he does not know how to read traditional nomenclature to getting him to participate was a challenge. On top of that, he has a slight hearing disability, so learning chords by ear without music made his hurdles even higher. We had to rely solely on tabs chord charts and his basic reading skills to get him up to snuff. It took about 2 years, but he is now one of our strongest musicians in the band and can play even professional performances. He's memorized the chords by feel instead of sound and can sight-read many charts we read as a band with great accuracy. Great success story.

Describe at least one way you have used technology to meet the needs of a student with a disability in your classroom. Be sure to describe the specific technology and how it assisted the student with a disability.

I have been very fortunate to gain access to a smart board. This has been huge in my teaching because it has allowed me to help students with disabilities by using the mark option with literally everything I teach. I can show students live helpful resources on the internet and then immediately make edits and connections within the lesson and resource. I have a student who has a hearing disability and by using the giant 75 inch visual aid in addition with the marker option, we're able to move through lessons very quickly and that student can keep pace no problem.

Describe an example of adapted assessment you have successfully used in the fine arts classroom for students with disabilities.

In order to help students who need more time outside of regular class to submit assignments and playing tests, I allow students to submit assignments via Google Classroom or via email from home.
