Students with Disabilities

I have a student with a physical disability with his hands. Playing a recorder was extremely challenging for him. It was difficult for him to cover the holes completely. At my recent conference, I just picked up a new type or recorder (NUVO) with flaps that can help him play. He will be so excited to join in confidently. Before this I would modify his notes so he had less fingerings to try to master, but this new instrument should help him feel even more included in the class! There are so many things that are out there now to help students with physical disabilities play instruments. The ESE department at your school may even help purchase them for you!

Describe at least one way you have used technology to meet the needs of a student with a disability in your classroom. Be sure to describe the specific technology and how it assisted the student with a disability.

In my music classroom, I have tablets that are used to help students learn note names on the staff. There are 3 main activities that teach/practice the skills at a different speed. Students are allowed to choose which app to use. Treble Cat is more explicit, adding one note at a time. Flash Note Derby can change speed of ques, how many ques, notes to practice, and is a moderate difficulty level. Staff Wars is the most difficult with an added note range and faster speed overall. The students are practicing the same skill but students can choose which is best for them individually. All 3 offer immediate feedback on answers. This offers my students the safety of practicing and getting individually feedback as well as choosing their level for practice.

For students that have oral presentation, I read all questions during our composer biography lesson. They also have extended time. Preferential seating is an easy accommodation to help those that are easily distracted to focus.
